31/08/10 Tigers see big improvement in Final pre-season game. We were very pleased with the improvement on last week however we are going to have to step up another level when we travel to South Leicester this week for our first league match. We played our patterns well and our decision making was a vast improvement on last week. The work which we had done in the weeks training paid off in the game. Some impressive performances from Joe Wright at fly-half but a little too brave at times in his aggressive tackling. The pack played well but fitness still needs to improve. The return of Biff Pearson, Tom Outram, Sam Bastock, Jamie Clarke, and Charlie Cone this week will see some competition for places. With Gregor Hayter having a cracked bone in his foot we may have to shuffle the pack but we have the strength in the squad for this. It is disappointing as Gregor had a big game before going off injured. Andy Barnes has been given the 1st XV captaincy for the season and led the team very well. Steve Pearson has taken on the captaincy of the Development squad after a great first season at the club last year and Dominic Ramsden has earned the club Captains arm band. The Development squad won 29-0 which augurs well for the start to their season and they also, will only get stronger.

25/08/10 Tigers boosted by the return of experience for the final pre-season match. Last weeks game was, as expected, a tough game and a little baptism of fire for some of our youngsters. The coaching team had a good chance to look at the players and see where we are early on. Our defensive work was very good, however two mistakes due to a little inexperience, allowed Pontefract's powerful mid-field to score 2 tries under the posts. Our youngsters did very well and have shown a lot of signs that the potential is there. Some good performances from Anthony Ross, Oli Rogers and Joe Wright should lead the way for the other young players and they must all realise that to keep their places in this team will be very hard so they are going to have to be putting in an improved performance each week. With a number of players unavailable for the first game and a large number returning over the coming weeks competition for places will be hard. Tigers this week delay selection until after Thursday training as performances during training will be monitored as both the 1st XV and Development XV are playing at home against Scunthorpe. This week also sees the return of Andy Barnes, John Buchanan, Calum Mckenzie, Nav Sandhu & Bevan Wilkinson, which will bring back some great experience and power. The following week will see the additions of Tom Outram, Neil Pearson and Biff Pearson fresh from the End2End charity cycle ride. Having all these players back will bring issues for selection but a welcome one. We look forward to having two good performances this weekend and hope you will get up to the club for the 3pm KO.

19/08/10 Tigers give debuts to 7 players this Saturday in the opening pre-season match and look forward to the buildup in the coming weeks to the first league match on the 4th September. Our opponents, Pontefract (North One East league) will have a strong squad and they gave us a hard Yorkshire Cup game at their ground last season. They have a new coaching team and are looking for a positive start to their season so we expect a big challenge. It will take time to settle in the squad, but we cannot wait for two games to do this we must front up in the first ten minutes and look to build throughout the trial games. We have to take this seriously and be assertive in all avenues of our game. The debut players are Anthony Ross at prop, Oli Rogers at open-side, Gregor Hayter at 8, and a new half-back combination of Matt Hargreaves at scrm-half and Joe Wright at fly-half. Marcus Cambridge starts at centre with Jon Feeley filling the full-back role. So quite a few changes and some new experienced players, however out of the 19 players in the squad 11 players are under 21. We look forward to seeing the players in action and challenging for their positions over the coming weeks. There is a lot of competition for places in this new squad in a new season. So please come along and support the club. Richard Senior Tigers Director of Rugby

04/08/10 Tigers get Final Piece in the Jigsaw says Tigers Director of Rugby, Richard Senior, with
the announcement of the arrival of Jon Feeley from Rotherham Titans, as player/backs coach. Jon will add some dynamism to our back play and will greatly enhance the coaching and development of our young players.
Statement from new player/backs coach, Jon Feeley: “After playing professionally for 12 years with Leeds Carnegie, Wakefield, Sedgley Park, Rotherham Titans, Bradford Bulls & Leeds Rhinos, and gained representative honours from Yorkshire U21’s through to England Students & England Legends, I was actively looking for a new challenge. The chance to develop a successful team at Sheffield Tigers was an opportunity I couldn’t ignore. Gregor Hayter, Steve Salvin and Andy Barnes are people I have great respect for and I know that Tigers must be a club with great ambition to have secured them for next season. Along with Director of Rugby, Richard Senior, they have developed plans to progress up through the leagues by building a successful rugby club both on and off the field. I hope to be a big part of this by helping the club to achieve its aims. Sheffield is a huge city and by playing an exciting brand of rugby I hope that we can attract many more people to Dore Moor. In my role as backs coach, I will aim to build a dynamic back line capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. I want the backs to make decisions for themselves and most importantly, play with confidence. Having worked with the players in pre-season training, I know they have the talent and potential to achieve this and look forward to playing with them this coming season.”

04/07/10 Tigers Head Coach take on pre-season first week.

The first week of pre-season's been very encouraging for the coaching team, the players have been put through their paces and the results have been very positive. As an amateur club, I appreciate that players value the summer months as a time to spend with their families and take much needed holidays, but the turn out has been very encouraging. Our approach to pre-season fitness training, with an emphasis on speed and power, has been well received by everyone, and the squad have worked very hard. The majority of the drills we've done have been an opportunity for the coaching staff to assess strengths and weaknesses of the team as a whole, and also on areas of development for individuals. In the next couple of weeks we'll keep working hard on the physical conditioning of the squad, introduce and develop team defensive systems and attacking patterns, whilst still working hard on fundamental ball skills. I thought the Fun Day for Tiger's Juniors on Saturday 26th June, was a great success, it's great to have senior players coaching the youth's and mini's and you could see that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, particularly Steve Salvin, who had a very beneficial day "networking"!! It's important that the club atmosphere continues to grow and that it isn't just a one-off, so there will be more of these type of events in the future.

13/05/10 Tigers get Another Piece in the Jigsaw says Tigers Director of Rugby, Richard Senior. He
is pleased to announce that Steve Salvin has joined Tigers coaching team. Steve will be filling two roles, one as assistant coach to Gregor and secondly to work with our Junior section on developing both the players and coaches. Steve has been fantastic at developing the younger players through the Doncaster Academy and into adult players of exceptional quality. Some of our players have been working closely with Steve over the last year at Doncaster and will continue to work with him on their personal development over the closed season. Steve and I have been working closely together over the last year and have discussed the ambitions we have as a club and how important our Junior section is to produce the players to continue our success. Steve and the 1st XV coaching team will be introducing mid-week coaching clinics over the summer months with a summer camp and mid-week clinics through the winter months which our Junior section will relish. Steve will be a great addition to the club and we welcome him to Tigers.
Statement from new assistant coach, Steve Salvin: “I am delighted to be joining Sheffield Tigers following three great years with Doncaster Knights as Academy Manager. While at Doncaster, Richard and myself built the link between the two clubs so I know Tigers as a club very well. I see my role as assistant coach, as a new challenge and I am very much looking forward to working with Gregor and Richard. In addition I will be doing some work upskilling the mini/junior coaches and again very much look forward to working and hopefully developing the excellent volunteer coaches at the club. It will be different combining coaching with a full time job away from rugby, having been employed full time as Academy Manager while at Doncaster. However, I have always been keen to do more adult coaching and this is why Tigers is such an exciting move for me. I very much look forward to meeting everyone around the club and I am sure we will have a successful season.”

A message from Director of Coaching Richard Selkirk
During this season ongoing positive and productive reviews of the clubs coaching and playing structures have resulted in a very forward thinking strategic action plan. With the departure of Harry Toews (back to Canada) and Dave Scully (to closer to home, Wheatley Hills) from the coaching team at the end of the season it was agreed to re-organise the coaching structure to allow planning and recruitment to take immediate effect for the coming season. We still have a lot of ambition for the club but have seen the necessity to strengthen the coaching team to allow our objectives to be fulfilled. It is time for the old boys to move sideways a little and bring in some new blood. The end of the 2009/10 season is my 7th season at the club and I have enjoyed every moment. I have been supported along the way by a number of special people who have bought into the progressive way the club operates and wishes to go. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to Harry, Dave & JB for their support and hard work throughout this season and as always the unstinting work and friendship of Stinger.
Since arriving from Selby 7 years ago I feel that the club has made significant progress both on and off the playing field. I always stated that National Three North (North 1 before reorganisation) was a level of rugby that the club could establish and perform at with consistency and this has been proven. Despite this seasons 10th place finish we have proved that we can be a match for any teams at this level. Over the last 7 seasons along with Richard Senior I feel justifiably proud of the players and the clubs successes. 3 Promotions, Yorkshire Shield Winners, RFU Vase winners and now a Yorkshire Cup Final along with the success that the 2nd/development XV has had again over this period. I feel privileged to have had this opportunity to work with and alongside so many people that have enabled the club to progress.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome and wish Gregor Hayter and our new coaching team every success for the future. My new role will involve developing players for the future and supporting Gregor and the other coaches to ensure that players at Sheffield Tigers have access to the best possible training and playing experience. Richard and I will be making sure our next three years objectives will be achieved. We will also have a lot more flexibility to watch our development XV and other clubs play as we look to strengthen our squads in the coming years. We are wanting the players with ambition to join Tigers as this year has been the most successful year we have had for developing U20 players. During the season we have had 8/9 players all under 20 turning out in the 1st XV and we have seen them develop so well. Players from Middlesbrough, Sleaford, Newark, Bedford, Doncaster, and Leeds have travelled twice a week to Tigers for the excellent coaching and player development we offer. Our relationship with Doncaster and the future looks in great shape and we have had 11 players turn out for Doncaster 'A' team this year. Our club will again be working closely to enhance this relationship.
We have one or two more announcements to make over the coming weeks but please let us support our new head coach. Finally, Thank you to everyone who has supported the players and the coaches in striving to provide a professional and forward thinking club, to the committee, sponsors and supporters but particularly Richard for making my tenure as enjoyable and successful as it has been.

to announce the recruitment of Gregor Hayter as head coach for the coming season. Gregor is a 2nd row and has been playing at Rotherham Titans in the Championship. He has previously played for Glasgow, Newbury, England Counties and Scotland U18 & U21. Gregor will head up a new coaching team for next season which will be announced shortly. Andy Barnes who has also been playing at Rotherham Titans is also returning to be part of this new team. It is fantastic news for the club that two Championship players will be playing at Tigers next season. We have some more additions to make over the coming weeks but we are moving forward with some excellent player coaches. Gregor will bring much experience to the club and will fit in very well and, with the Tigers crowd favourite Barnsey coming back as well, things are starting to look good for next season.
Statement from new head coach, Gregor Hayter: “I've been a full time player for 10 years, full time with Edinburgh Reivers, Overmach Parma, Viadana, Glasgow Warriors, Newbury Blues and Rotherham Titans. I've also played club rugby with Sunnybank in Brisbane, and Washington DC in the US. I've played Scotland under 18, 21 and Development, and England Counties tour to Russia. I'm very excited to be given this fantastic opportunity, after meeting Richard and seeing the facilities it was an easy decision to make. With such a great family atmosphere and a vibrant junior section, I think the foundations are set to build a strong and very competitive team that will challenge for promotion and get Sheffield Tigers higher up the leagues. I'm chomping at the bit to start and can't wait for the new season to begin!"
