05/05/11 Tigers U12’s End on a High with Cup Win at Dinnington Festival
Dinnington Festival (Tournament Date: 01/05/2011)

A fantastic season for the Under 12's has been rounded off by winning the Cup at the Dinnington Festival. Two weeks earlier the team had enjoyed a very successful first tour when they travelled to the Scarborough Festival. Over both Saturday and Sunday of the festival the boys remained undefeated with 6 wins and 2 draws seeing them through to the Cup final and a tough challenge against Lancashire Cup holders Manchester. Despite a strong performance the boys missed out in what was their 3rd Cup final of the season following previous appearances as finalists at the Ilkeston and Doncaster festivals. Having faced excellent opposition from the length and breadth of England and Scotland, reaching the final at Scarborough demonstrated just how far the whole squad has progressed and the high standard of committed and skillful play that has been so evident on the pitch. Off the pitch it was a great opportunity for the boys and parents to get together and a wonderful time was had by all.

Cup Finalists U12 Squad

The Dinnington Festival saw the team pitted against Cleethorpes, Dinnington and Doncaster. Despite narrowly losing their first game to Doncaster the lads fought back and eventually reached the final to face Cleethorpes. At half-time Tigers had a narrow 2 tries to 1 lead against the Lincolnshire club who had pushed them hard all the way to the whistle. The second half saw our boys step up a gear and finish as winners by 6 tries to 1. The reaction of the players, coaches and parents told the story of how much the win meant. After coming so close to cup wins, this end of season victory was the perfect reward for all the hard work put in by all team members and our dedicated coaches.

A big well done to all players, coaches and parents for working so hard this season. Thanks also to all the members of the senior club that have helped the Under 12's with coaching - bring on next season!

30/03/11 Tigers U12’s Cup Finalists at Doncaster Festival
Doncaster Festival (Tournament Date: 27/03/2011)

Tigers U12's impressive season continued as they fought their way to a well deserved appearance in the Doncaster Festival Cup Final. This was the second cup final in two weeks for the massively improved youngsters. On March 13th 2011, the boys had completed a try fest to win their group at the Ilkeston Festival only to suffer defeat at the hands of a skillful Melbourne ‘A’, known in their region as the best team at that age group.

The Doncaster festival saw the lads pitched against strong teams in the group stage including Selby who had subjected them to a heavy away defeat in the Yorkshire Cup earlier this season. Rising to the occasion, Tigers beat Selby and the other group opponents, Hull Ionians and Guisborough without conceding a try. A name check is deserved for try scorers George Talbot, Jacob Cauthorn, Will Boot and Mitch O'Brien but the strength in depth of the squad is being demonstrated by committed performances by every single team member. A special thanks goes out to Jake Stead & Louis Redfern on their debut in a Tigers shirt!  As group winners Tigers progressed to a semi against old foe's Doncaster. In a battling match Tigers made the decisive move to score the first try. Though Doncaster responded with a try of their own Tigers early strike meant they progressed from the drawn semi to the cup final. Pitched against York for the cup, the U12's made a strong start and as the half-time whistle blew the score stood at 0-0. In the second half York make the match winning move and their first try was followed by two more as Tigers felt the effects of their earlier games.

Despite the loss of the final the team received their medals with pride and are looking forward to their tour to the Scarborough Festival with growing confidence.

20/03/11 Tigers U7’s Scoop Plate at Ilkeston Festival
Ilkeston Festival (Tournament Date: 13/03/2011)

At a well-run, friendly Ilkeston Festival, Tigers U7s finished strongly to bag their first piece of silverware by winning the Plate competition.
The team got off to a solid start with a draw against eventual losing Cup finalists Mansfield ‘A’ but lost narrowly in their other two group games against Ashbourne and Paviours ’A’.
After topping up sugar levels (!), Tigers found renewed vigour to ease past Paviours ‘B’ in the Plate semi-final before showing some great teamwork, lovely passing and good support play to turn the tables on Ashbourne in the Plate final.
This was the team’s first ever Festival and they coped admirably with the whole occasion and played with tremendous spirit. Well done Tigers!

19/10/10 Tigers U11s miss out at Manchester Festival but receive a Fair Play Trophy
Manchester Festival (Tournament Date: 17/10/2010)

Tigers U11s narrowly missed out on progressing through to the plate competition on points difference at the highly competitive Manchester Festival. However the squad were delighted to receive a 'fair play' trophy from Sale Sharks and England U18 player, Simon McIntyre.
Tigers U11s beat Sandbach in a close game, lost to the impressive Lymm and drew with Warrington RUFC who went through in second place on points difference. All matches being played and conducted in the spirit of the game.
Thanks must go to Manchester RUFC who organised the festival and arranged a 'friendly' game for us after the tournament. The Tigers players have since received praise from the Warrington RUFC coach and referee for the manner in which we played which has reflected well on us as a Club. Well done Tigers U11s.

Tournament Reports 2009-2010:

07/05/10 Tigers U10’s Reach Their First Final at Last
Matlock Festival (Tournament Date: 25/04/010)

Having reached 3 semi-finals over the last two seasons Tigers Under 10’s were determined to go further in the last tournament of the 2009-10 season. On Sunday 25th April at the Matlock Festival, they managed to do just that picking up the runners-up trophy having lost out by only one try to nil in a close fought final against West Park Leeds.
The day started well for Tigers beating local rivals Sheffield Club 5-0 in a tough opening game. Tigers went on to finish second in their group beating Marple, Southwell and Bakewell along the way.
This set up a semi-final against one of the tournament favourites West Bridgeford, who were at that stage undefeated, having beaten all six of their opponents on the way to winning their group. Just before the semi-final the heavens opened and rain sent from Dore Moor lifted the Tigers players spirits enough to beat a skillful West Bridgeford team 5-0.
Tigers gave everything in the final against West Park Leeds and did themselves credit on and off the pitch. It was nice to pick up a trophy for all the hard work this season and gives us the belief that we can win a tournament in the future. Well done Tigers Under 10s!

04/11/09 Tigers U12’s Reach Their First Final of the Season
Macclesfield Floodlight Festival (Tournament Date: 31/10/09)

Tigers U12's narrowly lost in the final of the Bowl at the high calibre annual Macclesfield Floodlight festival. The tournament is attended by the top county sides from England & Wales and is a show piece for players who will go on to play the game professionally

Tigers opened their campaign with a loss to the eventual cup winners and hosts, Macclesfield, losing 0-5. Tigers were starved of ball for 95% of the games but defended their line in uncompromising fashion. Jack Pollard-Glaves was tenacious throughout aided by a wall of tough tackling backs who refused to buckle under the relentless pressure from Macclesfield.
In our second group game, Tigers played North Wales side, Mold. In what was a very tight game, Tigers were very unlucky to be edged out 0-1. The front row of Eddie Wain(who anchored the scrum superbly well), Tom Lloyd and Lewis Perkins ruled the underworld that is the front-row, backed up by John Hesketh and Daniel Gentles in the second-row. Michael Stacey drove forward on every occasion, putting the opposition on the back foot and allowing the backs the opportunity to lay siege to the Mold line.
Sam Smith and Euan Coutie came on in the second half at prop and second-row respectively and kept the pressure on Mold with strong scrumaging and driving in the mauls. Despite continuous pressure Tigers could not get the vital opening score and totally against the run of play, Mold sneaked a try from a quick penalty, only after breaking a brave tackle from Coutie on the Tigers line. The backs who had been resolute in the first game were again playing with the decisiveness and directness that make sides successful. The half-back pairing of Silas Talbot and Tom Mullaney broke the line numerous times and the tackling of centres Greg Beatson and Yared Heller gave the platform for the wings, Jacob Lee-Williams & James Gormley to torment the opposition. Nathan Hardy playing his first game at full-back was growing in confidence and fast becoming a rock at the back. Despite a late sniping run by Talbot which resulted in an unawarded try, Tigers ended up on the wrong side of a 0-1 defeat.

Having completed the group warm up games, Tigers now faced Derby (County Cup Champions, 2009) and Harrogate (Yorkshire Cup semi-finalists, 2009) in the knock out stages with 2 to progress from 3 teams. Both games were played on the floodlit first team pitch at Macclesfield.

First up was Harrogate. The opportunity of playing in front of a considerable crowd of supporters on a National League 2 ground under floodlights clearly had the desired effect on the Tigers. From the first whistle, Tigers tore into Harrogate, playing the game in the opposition’s half. The pack of Lewis Perkins, Tom Lloyd, Dominic S, John Hesketh, George Veall and Jack PG pressurised Harrogate, starving them of the ball. Again the half-backs of Silas Talbot and Tom Mullaney made metres at every opportunity and ensured that Tigers played with forward momentum. Tom Underwood and Greg Beatson tackled ferociously and Nathan Hardy ran the ball back from full-back in a manner that strangled the opposition in channels created by the direct running centre play of Yared Heller & Greg Beatson. The games finished a draw but now we were starting to see the Tigers playing at their best. It bodes well for the Yorkshire Cup next week having narrowly missed putting one of Yorkshire’s finest sides to the sword.
Going into the Derby game, we either had to win or draw to go through to the Bowl final against a side we had not previously beaten. From the start the pack laid the platform for the backs to run at the heart of the opposition. Silas Talbot and Tom Mullaney as a pairing were extremely effective all afternoon and it was on the brink of half-time that Tom Mullaney burst through the Derby defence to score Tigers’s first try of the day. Yared Heller continued to make his bulldozer runs up the first centre channel, assisted by his centre partner Greg Beatson and the wings, James Gormley and Jacob Lee-Williams.
In the second half the pack continued to ask the questions of the opposition. Dominic Simpkin (stole 2 opposition line outs at crucial times) and Geoge Veall dominated the line outs while John Hesketh ruled the mauls. Jack Pollard-Glaves carried for the hard metres time and time again. Replacements in the forwards in Cameron Mackenzie, Michael Stacey and Eddie Wain did not take a backward step and ensured we maintained our forward dominance.
Tom Mullaney controlled the game from fly-half with intelligent kicking and straight running at the heart of the derby defence. Derby, unable to breach the Tigers defensive line resorted to a kicking game but their kicks were returned with interest by Nathan Hardy to which Derby had no answer. With time ebbing away for a Derby fightback, Jacob Lee-Williams made a break on the right wing which brought our pack within striking distance of the Derby line. Excellent mauling by the front 6 was superbly finished off by George Veall to make it 2-0. Tigers then closed the game out to go into the Bowl final.

The Bowl final against Cheshire side Bowdon proved to be another hellish battle. It proved a game to far for the Tigers and although the whole squad defended bravely, we allowed Bowdon too much space to run at our defence and ended up losing 0-4.

This tournament was a fantastic achievement for Tigers U12's bearing in mind that some of the country’s elite player squads competed in this competition and we ended the tournament in the tier above the competition contested by the Yorkshire Champions and Derbyshire champions.
Well done to all and it shows what can be achieved by this squad with focus, application and determination.
