TIGERS LOOK TO SPIRIT OF WHARFEDALE FOR VISIT OF LEAGUE LEADERS
Sheffield Tigers return to home action this Saturday for the first time in 2022 when they entertain top of the table Hull, buoyed by a spirited, never-say-die 13-9 victory on the road at Wharfedale last weekend. The visitors will be in confident mood too after a comprehensive 48-5 win over Stourbridge, boasting a five point lead over second place Rotherham in the league table, although the Titans have two games in hand.
Tigers’ Director of Rugby, Jack Howieson, was full of praise for his side in last week’s match. “In difficult conditions we defended very well in the first half and only a couple of well kicked penalties from out wide enable Wharfedale to lead 9-3 at the interval. They had restricted us to only around 30% of possession and I was not worried but our half-time message to the team was clear and simple, ‘Be patient with the ball in hand, work through the phases, and keep the discipline, as the referee was quickly spotting any infringements.’ We were much more resilient in the second half and it showed our spirit when we were rewarded with a decisive late try. All the players deserve pats on the back for a hard working, confident display. As a bonus we have now gone five halves of rugby without conceding a try.”
Looking ahead to facing Hull Howieson was both realistic and upbeat. “There is no doubt they are a good side, as their record shows, but they are not unbeatable. I have seen them a couple of times this season, their forwards are strong and their backs are fast and skilful but we will be looking to extend our own run of three wins in a row. We welcome back Tom Calladine after a covid enforced break, unfortunately both Ollie Church (concussion) and Henry Rank (dislocated shoulder) miss out, but we have good depth in our squad.”
Saturday’s action gets underway at Dore Moor at 2pm. Admission is £10 including on-site car parking and matchday programme. An intriguing encounter awaits.
